What Stress Can do to Your Skin

Nobody wants stress in their life, and recent research shows us that it can impact our health in many ways. Today we’re going to look at how stress can affect your skin and some ways to counter it.

Spots and other skin issues

High levels of stress can affect gut bacteria and unbalance the gut microbes causing inflammation and can trigger things such as spots, acne, eczema or psoriasis. If you’re already prone to skin conditions, stress is likely to trigger these flare-ups.

Dry skin

Stress spikes adrenaline and cortisol, which causes us to sweat more. Excessive sweating can cause us to become dehydrated and lead to dry skin. What’s more, some people believe that having dry skin means you’re more prone to eczema.

The shift in hormone levels caused by stress can increase the sebaceous glands’ activity, leading to more oil being produced. If this happens, it can cause your pores to become blocked and cause acne breakouts.

Scalp and Hair

Although not strictly your skin, we thought it was worth mentioning the impact stress can have on your hair and scalp. As stress causes the shift in hormone levels, our bodies can react in different ways. Some people may find their hair becomes oilier, while others may find it becomes drier. It can also cause a dry, itchy scalp and dandruff.

What can you do?

If you’re feeling stressed, it can be easy to neglect your skin, but at this time, it’s just as important, if not more, to continue your skincare routine to try to limit the number of flare-ups, oil and dryness. Make sure to get regular exercise which is good for the body and the skin. Practising yoga or meditation and ensuring you get seven to eight hours of sleep each night can help reduce stress. Talking to someone, whether that is a friend, family member, or a professional therapist, is a proven approach to managing stress.
